How to identify
- Eight legs and two body sections, with no antennae or wings.
- Most house spiders are brown, gray or black and small to medium in size.
- Many build webs in corners. Others hunt on the ground and don't use webs to catch prey.

- A small spider, about 1/4 inch or less, with a round dirty-white to brown abdomen marked with gray chevrons and yellowish legs with darker rings.
- Where you'll find it
- Builds tangled cobwebs in room corners, window frames, basement joists and damp crawl spaces.
Long-bodied cellar spider
Pholcus phalangioides
- Look for
- A pale tan spider with a long, narrow body and extremely long, thin legs.
- Where you'll find it
- Hangs upside down in loose, messy webs in basements, garages and other dark, quiet corners all year.
Wolf spiders
Lycosidae (several species)
- Look for
- A hairy, dark brown spider that runs down its prey on the ground instead of spinning a web; females carry their egg sac with them.
- Where you'll find it
- Lives in grass and leaf litter and wanders indoors now and then, but doesn't settle in and stay.
Black widow spiders
Latrodectus (several species)
- Look for
- A glossy black spider about 1/2 inch long with a round abdomen and red markings.
- Where you'll find it
- Hides in quiet outdoor spots like woodpiles, rock piles and dark corners of garages and sheds.

DIY prevention tips
- Vacuum or sweep away webs and egg sacs regularly, especially in basements, closets and garages.
- Cut down clutter in storage areas so spiders have fewer quiet places to hide.
- Install door sweeps and keep window screens tight and in good repair.
- Move firewood, stacked items and debris away from the foundation, and trim back shrubs and vines touching the house.
- Use yellow bulbs at outside doors, since they draw fewer of the night-flying insects spiders feed on.

Why do I have so many spiders in my house?
Spiders come inside looking for shelter and food. Homes with lots of insects, clutter or bright outdoor lights near the doors tend to see more spiders.
Are house spiders dangerous?

How can I tell if a spider is a brown recluse?
Brown recluse spiders have a dark violin-shaped mark on the back and six eyes in three pairs. They aren't part of our plans, and brown recluse remediation starts with a free inspection.
How can I keep spiders out of my house?
Cut down on clutter, sweep away webs and seal gaps around windows and doors. Trim shrubs back from the house and use yellow bulbs in outdoor lights, which draw fewer insects.
