Wasp Control
Wasps build paper or mud nests in sheltered spots around the outside of a home. Every Liberty plan covers wasps on the first floor of your home, and your Service Specialist removes wasp nests on regular visits.
How to identify
- Slender insects with a narrow waist, two pairs of wings and smooth, shiny bodies.
- Paper wasps are brown with yellow or red markings, and their long legs hang down in flight.
- Mud daubers are black or metallic blue and build tube-shaped mud nests.

- A slender black to reddish-brown wasp, up to about 3/4 inch long, with a very thin waist.
- Where you'll find it
- Hangs open, umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves, gutters, ledges and porch ceilings, and inside sheds and barns.
European paper wasp
Polistes dominula
- Look for
- A black-and-yellow paper wasp that is easy to mistake for a yellow jacket, though it builds an open umbrella-shaped nest.
- Where you'll find it
- Nests in the same sheltered spots as other paper wasps: eaves, overhangs, ledges and outbuildings.
Black and yellow mud dauber

- Look for
- A slim, dark wasp with yellow markings, about 3/4 inch long, with a long, thread-thin waist.
- Where you'll find it
- Builds mud nests on sheltered outside walls, under eaves and in garages and sheds.

Larger homes and properties require a free in-person inspection to confirm your plan. The $99 first visit applies when you sign up online for the Quarterly or Patriot Plan; the Freedom Plan first visit is $199. The Quarterly Plan has no contract. The Patriot and Freedom Plans include a 1-year service agreement. The Freedom Plan includes a termite inspection before Sentricon installation.
DIY prevention tips
- Keep outdoor trash cans closed with tight-fitting lids, and set them away from doors and patios.
- Cover food and drinks when eating outside, and clean up spills and leftovers promptly.
- Caulk cracks and keep screens repaired so wasps can't build nests inside walls, attics or sheds.
- Walk calmly away from wasps instead of swatting at them.
- Don't knock down or spray a nest yourself; call a professional, especially for nests up high or near doors.

What's the difference between wasps, yellow jackets and hornets?
Paper wasps are slender, with long legs that hang down in flight, and build open, umbrella-shaped nests. Yellow jackets and hornets build enclosed paper nests in the ground, walls or trees. Yellow jackets and hornets aren't part of our plans and start with a free inspection.
