I’m currently in the process of buying a home, and after our initial inspection, we were told there might be termite damage. How to identify
- Brown or black insects with long antennae and large back legs for jumping.
- House crickets are light yellowish brown with dark bands on the head.
- Camel crickets are humpbacked, tan and wingless, with very long legs.

- A light yellowish-brown cricket, about 3/4 to 1 inch long, with three dark bands across its head.
- Where you'll find it
- Can live indoors year-round in warm, dark places.
Field crickets
Gryllus spp.
- Look for
- A sturdy black cricket, about 1/2 to 1 1/4 inches long, whose hind wings stick out past its front wings.
- Where you'll find it
- Wanders in from yards in fall, often drawn toward outdoor lights.
Camel crickets (cave crickets)
Ceuthophilus spp. and Tachycines asynamorus
- Look for
- A wingless, humpbacked tan-to-brown cricket, 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches long, with very long legs and antennae; it doesn't chirp.
- Where you'll find it
- Hides in cool, damp basements, crawl spaces, garages and laundry rooms.

DIY prevention tips
- Seal cracks in the foundation, siding, windows and doors, and add weather stripping at door thresholds.
- Switch outdoor lights to yellow bulbs, which attract fewer crickets.
- Move firewood, boards, rocks and overgrown plants away from the foundation.
- Keep mulch pulled back about a foot from the house.

Why do I have crickets in my house?
